To be a child again! Since we all have this wish just before Christmas, we, the people of Lienz, have constructed for you and for ourselves the most fascinating Advent Market at the foot of the Lienz Dolomites.
The Christmas Market in Lienz is, with the exception of the Innsbruck market, the one with the longest tradition in Tyrol. The over 60 supporting events give it a very special and typically regional touch.
On 25th November 2011 the Lienz Christmas Market opens right in front of the Liebburg, Lienz’s town hall, in the main square with all its Christmas illuminations. It remains open as a meeting place for young and old until 24th December.
At the end of an afternoon’s shopping in the town centre, the tourists and visitors make their way to the Lienz Christmas Market to enjoy the festive cheer, inhale the aroma of roasted chestnuts, candy floss, freshly baked biscuits and fir twigs, listen to the traditional music and warm themselves at the open fires along with the local population.
A day in Advent at the Lienz Christmas Market ends with the cry of the nightwatchman and the extinguishing of the lights in the market stalls. A day spent in harmony with the beautiful landscape; a day the family will never forget.
Opening hours: Monday - Thursday: from 3 p.m. until 9 p.m. Friday - Sunday and public holidays: from 10 a.m. until 9 p.m.
Supporting programme
In the Living Workshop at the Lienz Christmas Market there is plenty of work to do and things to make.
At 6:30 p.m. every day one of the advent calendar windows of the Liebburg, the focal point of the festive season in Lienz, is opened, revealing a work of art by a local artist.
A little rough and yet fascinating is how one would describe the shaggy creatures, or Krampusses, that roam the Lienz town centre on December 3, 5 and 6.
